from €120 per 14 days

Car with white Dutch export plates from Auto Export Almelo, ready for the export drive
Complete export package from Auto Export Almelo: export document, Green Card and two white export plates
RDW Erkend bedrijf logo: Auto Export Almelo is an RDW-approved export company

A dealer buys several vans in the Almelo area, has them driven home on Dutch export plates, and then registration takes longer than planned. The temporary third-party export insurance we arrange runs for 14 days. An extension adds two more weeks of cover and a new Green Card for each vehicle that still needs it.

No need to drive back to Hengelo: you can extend remotely, by WhatsApp, email or the request form below. We are not an insurer; the insurer decides.

Four situations in which you extend

  • Registration delayed. You or your customer abroad still await an inspection, an appointment with the registration authority or missing paperwork.
  • Delay on the way. The transport takes longer than planned.
  • Buyer needs more time. Your customer is not ready yet.
  • Batch in stages. Some vehicles are registered, others still wait; you only extend for those that still need cover.

How to extend export insurance online

  1. Request. Send the checklist details below for each registration number, via WhatsApp, email or the request form.
  2. Check. We go through your request and ask the insurer for approval through our insurance partner.
  3. Approval and price. If the insurer agrees, you get our confirmation and the price per registration number.
  4. Payment. Your bank transfer comes after that confirmation, not before. Declined requests are not charged.
  5. Certificate. Each vehicle gets its own new insurance certificate and Green Card by email, PDF included, usually within 15 minutes of your transfer.

A Green Card is never extended separately: new cover means a new Green Card. Ask well before the current one ends, so the new period starts where the old one stops. Our desk at Slachthuisweg 135 in Hengelo handles extensions too, for example when you bring another vehicle anyway; the Green Card document is handed over there, usually within 15 minutes.

Checklist per registration number

  • the Dutch registration number;
  • the Green Card or policy currently in force, photographed or as a PDF;
  • the date on which that cover ends;
  • current location (country) and final destination;
  • who the policyholder is and who will drive, with their details.

If the policyholder is a business, include its company name, address and VAT number. Several vehicles? List the details per registration number in one message. The form's WhatsApp button is for photos and PDFs; any registration number and name already typed in are added to that WhatsApp message. Email to info@autoexportalmelo.nl works too.

Price per vehicle and repeat extensions

Per registration number, a 14-day extension starts from €120, including VAT where applicable: a Dutch export plate insurance extension always covers one vehicle. Trucks, heavy motorhomes and other heavy or non-standard vehicles may cost more; you hear the amount first. For several vehicles or a long-term working relationship, a discount is possible in some cases, always agreed in advance.

Good to know

  • Starting price per 14-day extension, including VAT where applicable. The price can be higher per vehicle, for example for heavy or non-standard vehicles.
  • Every extension needs the insurer's approval, and you only pay once we have confirmed that approval and the price. You can extend more than once, each time by 14 days.
  • Request the extension in good time so the new cover follows on from the current one. If your cover has already expired, an extension is still possible, for example if the vehicle has a valid APK (Dutch roadworthiness test) or technical inspection, again subject to the insurer's approval. Until the new cover starts, the vehicle must not be driven.
  • The extension covers the insurance only, not the export registration. On Dutch public roads you may drive for 14 days after deregistration, and never beyond the APK expiry date (RDW). The extension does not change that.
  • Abroad, the rules of the country where the vehicle is located apply. The policy and Green Card state which countries and drivers are covered.

Still waiting after two extra weeks? Another 14 days can be added, once more with the insurer's approval.

Export insurance arranged elsewhere

Was the current export insurance taken out with another company? Auto Export Almelo can still add 14 days with a policy that follows on from it, provided the insurer agrees. Send the same details plus that Green Card or policy. Our export insurance page explains what our 14-day cover includes.

Limits: what does not change

  • The export registration. The extension is for the insurance; the Dutch export registration itself is not extended.
  • The Dutch time limit. Driving on public roads in the Netherlands is possible for up to 14 days after deregistration, and not past the APK expiry date (the Dutch roadworthiness test). Extending the insurance does not move that limit.
  • Limit passed, vehicle still in the Netherlands? Then it can only continue on a trailer or car transporter.
  • Outside the Netherlands. The country where the vehicle is decides what is allowed, and not every country treats a Dutch export registration the same way. Find out before anyone drives the vehicle after the first 14 days. See also Dutch export plates.
  • Countries and driver. Where the cover applies, and for which driver, is shown on the policy and Green Card, not in a general list. The Council of Bureaux explains how the Green Card system works.
  • Days without cover. Cover that has run out can still be extended with the insurer's consent, e.g. when the APK or a technical inspection is current. Until the new cover starts, the vehicle stays off the road.

Frequently asked questions

Does the extension also extend my Dutch export registration?

No. The extension applies to the insurance only. The term of the export registration runs out as usual: 14 days after deregistration, or sooner if the APK expires first. If that term has passed while the vehicle is still in the Netherlands, it can only be moved by trailer or car transporter.

How soon will I receive the new insurance certificate?

Once your payment is made, the new insurance certificate and Green Card for each registration number usually reach your inbox within 15 minutes, as PDF files. You only transfer the money after we have confirmed the insurer's approval and the price. At our Hengelo desk, the Green Card document for an extension is usually in your hands within 15 minutes.

Who should be named as the driver for the extra 14 days?

The person who will actually drive the vehicle in that period, for example a driver from your company. The policy and Green Card show which driver is covered, so tell us in your request if someone other than the first driver will be at the wheel.

What if I request the extension too late?

Then there may be a gap between the end of the old cover and the start of the new one, and in that gap nobody may drive the vehicle, because it has no insurance. A late extension can still go ahead if the insurer approves, for instance when the APK has not yet run out or a technical inspection remains valid. Check the end date on each vehicle's Green Card and ask in time, so the new cover follows on directly.

Can I extend if the vehicle is already in my home country?

Yes, with the insurer's approval. Tell us in which country the vehicle is now. Whether you may still drive there on a Dutch export registration after the first 14 days depends on the rules of that country, so check them before the vehicle goes back on the road.
