Extend export plate insurance: 14 more days of cover per vehicle

Is a vehicle waiting abroad for registration, or held up by a delayed transport? Online, we can add 14 days of third-party cover for that registration number, with the insurer's approval. The extension is for the insurance only; the Dutch export registration is not extended.

  • 14 more days of cover per vehicle
  • Online, for one or more vehicles
  • Also for export cover from elsewhere

from €120 per 14 days

A dealer buys several vans in the Almelo area, has them driven home on Dutch export plates, and then registration takes longer than planned. The temporary third-party export insurance we arrange runs for 14 days. If a vehicle still has to use the road after that, it needs valid insurance. An extension gives that vehicle two more weeks of cover and a new Green Card.

No need to drive back to our desk in Hengelo: the extension is arranged remotely, by WhatsApp, by email or through the request form further down. We are not an insurer: our insurance partner passes your request on to the insurer, who makes the decision.

Four situations in which you extend

  • Registration delayed. You or your customer abroad are still waiting: for the inspection, a slot at the registration office or missing paperwork.
  • Delay on the way. The transport takes longer than planned.
  • Buyer needs more time. Your customer is not ready yet.
  • Batch in stages. Some vehicles are registered, others are still waiting. You only extend for the registration numbers that still need cover.

How to extend export insurance online

  1. Request. Send the checklist details below for each registration number, via WhatsApp, email or the request form.
  2. Insurer and price. Through our insurance partner we ask for approval and tell you the price per registration number.
  3. Payment. By bank transfer, once the price is confirmed.
  4. Certificate. Each vehicle gets its own new insurance certificate and Green Card by email, as a PDF where permitted.

A Green Card is never extended separately: new cover means a new Green Card. As the insurer sets the pace, ask early, well ahead of the end date on the current Green Card, so the new period can start where the old one stops.

Checklist per registration number

  • the Dutch registration number;
  • the Green Card or policy currently in force, photographed or as a PDF;
  • the date on which that cover ends;
  • current location (country) and final destination;
  • who the policyholder is and who will drive, with their details.

For a business policyholder, such as your company, add the company name, address and VAT number. Extending for several vehicles? List the details per registration number in one message. Photos and PDFs are easiest to send by WhatsApp to +31 6 38199986 or by email to info@autoexportalmelo.nl.

Price per vehicle and repeat extensions

Per registration number, a 14-day extension starts from €120, including VAT where applicable: a Dutch export plate insurance extension always covers one vehicle. A truck, a heavy motorhome or a heavy commercial vehicle can cost more, as can other heavy or non-standard vehicles. You hear the amount per vehicle before you pay.

Good to know

  • Starting price per 14-day extension, including VAT where applicable. The price can be higher per vehicle, for example for heavy or non-standard vehicles.
  • Every extension needs the insurer's approval. You can extend more than once, each time by 14 days.
  • Request the extension in good time so the new cover follows on from the current one. Without valid insurance the vehicle must not be driven.
  • The extension covers the insurance only. On Dutch public roads you may drive for 14 days after deregistration, and never beyond the APK expiry date (RDW). The extension does not change that.
  • Abroad, the rules of the country where the vehicle is apply. The policy and Green Card state the countries and drivers covered.

Still waiting after two extra weeks? A further 14-day extension is possible, but the insurer has to approve that one too, and we only know the outcome after its decision.

Export insurance arranged elsewhere

Was the current export insurance taken out with another company, for example because the export was handled there? Auto Export Almelo can still extend the cover by 14 days, with a policy that follows on from the current one, provided the insurer agrees. Send the same details plus that Green Card or policy. Our export insurance page explains what our 14-day cover includes.

Limits: what does not change

  • The export registration. The extension is for the insurance; the Dutch export registration itself is not extended.
  • The Dutch time limit. Driving on public roads in the Netherlands is possible for up to 14 days after deregistration, and not past the APK expiry date (the Dutch roadworthiness test). Extending the insurance does not move that limit.
  • Limit passed, vehicle still in the Netherlands? Then it can only continue on a trailer or car transporter.
  • Outside the Netherlands. The country where the vehicle is decides what is allowed, and not every country treats a Dutch export registration the same way. Find out before anyone drives the vehicle after the first 14 days. See also Dutch export plates.
  • Countries and driver. Where the cover applies, and for which driver, is shown on the policy and Green Card, not in a general list. The Council of Bureaux explains how the Green Card system works.
  • Days without cover. No vehicle may be driven without valid insurance, not even for a few days between the old and the new policy.

Frequently asked questions

Does the extension also extend my Dutch export registration?

No. The extension applies to the insurance only. The term of the export registration runs out as usual: 14 days after deregistration, or sooner if the APK expires first. If that term has passed while the vehicle is still in the Netherlands, it can only be moved by trailer or car transporter.

How soon will I receive the new insurance certificate?

We cannot give a fixed time: the pace depends on the insurer, who has to approve first. Once approval is in and your payment has arrived, you receive the insurance certificate with Green Card by email. So send your request well before the current cover ends.

Who should be named as the driver for the extra 14 days?

The person who will actually drive the vehicle in that period, for example a driver from your company. The policy and Green Card show which driver is covered, so tell us in your request if someone other than the first driver will be at the wheel.

What if I request the extension too late?

Then the current cover can run out with no new cover ready. Until valid insurance is in place again, the vehicle must stay off the road. Check the end date on the Green Card of each vehicle and send your request well before it. If in doubt, contact us.

Can I extend if the vehicle is already in my home country?

Yes, with the insurer's approval. Tell us in which country the vehicle is now. Whether you may still drive there on a Dutch export registration after the first 14 days depends on the rules of that country, so check them before the vehicle goes back on the road.
