Temporary export insurance for cars and vans from Almelo

Driving a Dutch car home after export? Through our insurance partner we arrange 14 days of third-party liability cover with a Green Card and white export plates, from €100 per vehicle. The policy states which driver and countries are covered.

  • 14 days liability cover + Green Card
  • Arranged per vehicle and per driver
  • White export plates included

A vehicle that drives home on its own wheels after export must be insured for the trip. We are not an insurer: we arrange temporary export insurance through our insurance partner, together with the white export number plates. You receive third-party liability cover for 14 days and a Green Card as international proof of insurance.

Whether you are an expat in Almelo driving your own car home or a dealer moving a batch of vans, the cover is arranged per vehicle and per driver. You arrange it at our RDW-approved export desk in Hengelo.

What the export insurance includes

  • Third-party liability: damage you cause to others with the vehicle.
  • Duration: 14 days.
  • Green Card: the international certificate of insurance.
  • White export plates: two for a car, one for a motorcycle, scooter, moped, caravan or trailer.
  • Not included: the export document, which you arrange separately or in the complete package.

According to the Council of Bureaux, a Green Card proves that the vehicle has at least the compulsory third-party cover of the country you visit.

The policy and Green Card decide

Which countries and which driver are covered is stated on the policy and the Green Card. For that reason we do not publish a fixed list of countries. Before you leave, check on the policy and the Green Card that your destination and every transit country are covered. Check the local rules for Dutch export plates in those countries as well, because they differ.

Per vehicle and per driver

We arrange export insurance in the Netherlands per vehicle, with the details of the person driving it. For each vehicle we need:

  • registration number and vehicle type;
  • the preferred start date;
  • destination and route;
  • details of the policyholder;
  • details of the driver;
  • for a business buyer: company name, address and VAT number.

Sending a team of drivers with several vehicles? Send these details per vehicle in advance, so everything is ready when you arrive.

Heavy vehicles, trailers and motorcycles

  • Truck: insurance and APK required; price on request.
  • Heavy motorhome, heavy commercial vehicle or semi-trailer: price on request.
  • Trailer or caravan: no insurance of its own, but the towing vehicle must be insured.
  • Motorcycle, scooter or moped: insurance required, no APK.

A vehicle that travels on a trailer or car transporter usually needs no driving insurance. The export documents are still required.

Price of the export insurance

Export insurance with white plates costs from €100 per vehicle, without the export document. The complete export package, including the export document and the vrijwaringsbewijs, costs from €150. It is the standard choice when the car drives abroad straight after export.

When can the price be higher?

  • All amounts are starting prices, including VAT where applicable.
  • A surcharge may apply outside office hours. Office hours: Monday to Saturday 10:00 to 16:30.
  • Postal delivery costs more, especially international shipping.
  • The price can differ per vehicle, for example for heavy or non-standard vehicles.
  • You always know the price in advance.

What can go wrong

  • The wrong driver on the policy. Name the person who will actually drive.
  • A start date that is too early. Choose it so the 14 days cover the whole trip.
  • Registration at home takes longer. You can then extend the export plate insurance online, each time by 14 days and with the insurer's approval. The export registration itself is not extended.
  • An expiring APK. The export registration is valid for 14 days, but not beyond the APK expiry date.
  • Missing yellow plates. They are handed in; if they are lost, have plates made by a recognised plate manufacturer first.

Where to arrange it

The desk is at Slachthuisweg 135 in Hengelo, about 16 km and roughly 20 minutes from the Grotestraat in Almelo. It is open Monday to Saturday, 10:00 to 16:30, and 24/7 by appointment outside those hours. More about the plates themselves is on the page Dutch export plates.

Frequently asked questions

Does the insurance cover damage to my own car?

No. The temporary export insurance is third-party liability cover: it covers damage you cause to others. Anything beyond that is stated on the policy.

What if my trip takes longer than 14 days?

Then you can extend the export insurance online, each time by 14 days and always with the insurer's approval, from €120 per extension. Ask well before the cover ends. The export registration itself is not extended: on Dutch public roads the limit stays at 14 days after deregistration, and never beyond the APK expiry date.

Can a hired driver take the vehicle abroad for me?

Give us the details of the person who will actually drive. The policy and Green Card determine which driver is insured, so if someone other than the driver you named will drive, check with us in advance.

Can I arrange export insurance from abroad?

Preparation can be done online. The yellow Dutch plates must reach us physically, by post or courier, and processing starts once they arrive. We send documents and white plates insured and with tracking; postal delivery costs more.

How do I pay for the export insurance?

In cash at the desk or by bank transfer. You get the price in advance; it can be higher outside office hours, for postal delivery or for a heavy vehicle.
